Proton VPN review: the quick answer
Proton VPN belongs on a privacy-focused shortlist. Its case rests on unusually inspectable evidence: a current privacy policy, a fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit, a dated transparency report, open-source apps, and published app-security audits. It also offers a genuinely usable free tier with no data limit. The main limitation of this update is performance evidence: until QuickVPNs completes and preserves a new hands-on run, we do not score speed, streaming access, leaks, or reliability.

What we changed in this 2026 review
The old page presented specific speed, competitor, streaming, and torrent results as QuickVPNs tests without a preserved raw evidence pack. We removed those measurements and first-person experience claims. Official documentation can establish a policy, protocol, plan feature, or public audit; it cannot prove performance on our connection. New results will require the baseline, device, app version, protocol, server choice, raw runs, medians, timestamps, and original screenshots defined in our VPN testing method.
Privacy policy and no-logs scope
Proton VPN’s privacy policy (protonvpn.com/privacy-policy), last modified July 30, 2025 when checked, says the VPN service does not log user traffic or communication content, does not throttle connections, and does not log VPN session data. The policy says the free service is covered by the same no-logs commitment, while reserving a right to restrict excessive consumption to protect free-server service quality.
“No logs” is not the same as “no account data.” Proton still processes information needed to create and operate an account, support payments, and provide the service. The policy says account-maintenance information is stored encrypted on Proton-operated systems in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway. Readers should use the full policy—not a badge or this summary—for the exact categories, purposes, retention, and legal bases.
2026 no-logs audit and transparency record
Proton published its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit (protonvpn.com/blog/no-logs-audit) in 2026. The independent review by Securitum examined whether the infrastructure, configuration, and operational controls matched the provider’s no-logs commitments. An audit is a dated, scoped assessment rather than a permanent guarantee, but recurring public reviews are stronger evidence than an unsupported policy claim.
The provider’s transparency report and warrant canary (protonvpn.com/blog/transparency-report), updated July 14, 2026, says Proton VPN received 47 legally binding Swiss orders through June 2026 and denied all 47 because it lacked identifying connection logs. This is provider-published reporting rather than an independent QuickVPNs review of every court file, so we treat it as useful corroboration—not proof beyond its stated scope.
Open-source apps and app-security audits
Proton publishes source code for its released VPN apps and links the repositories from its open-source and audit record (protonvpn.com/blog/open-source). The page was updated in December 2025 with links to newer independent app-security work. Open code lets researchers inspect implementation details; it does not mean every build or change is automatically safe, which is why the audit dates and scopes still matter.
Protocols and censorship-resistance options
Current protocol documentation (protonvpn.com/support/how-to-change-vpn-protocols) lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, Stealth, IKEv2, and Smart Protocol, with availability varying by platform. Smart Protocol can choose among supported options. Stealth is designed to disguise VPN traffic, but documentation of that design does not prove it will work against every network or censorship system. OpenVPN and IKEv2 are now limited to particular apps, so a generic “available everywhere” checklist would be inaccurate.
Free and paid plan differences
Proton’s current plan guide (protonvpn.com/support/knowledge-base-bonus-connections) says Proton Free has no data limit, one VPN connection, and randomly selected access across servers in 10 countries. VPN Plus adds up to 10 simultaneous connections, user-selected servers, streaming and P2P features, Secure Core, NetShield, split tunneling, and other paid capabilities. Feature availability still depends on the app and operating system.
Speed, leaks, and kill-switch test status
QuickVPNs has not completed a reproducible August 2026 Proton VPN performance run. We make no current claim about download loss, international speed, latency, reconnect time, DNS or WebRTC leaks, forced-disconnect behaviour, battery use, or VPN Accelerator gains. WireGuard’s design and Proton’s “highest speed” marketing do not replace measurements on our own connection.
The planned retest will preserve the unprotected baseline, device and operating system, app and protocol versions, selected locations, at least three runs per route, medians, leak-test output, kill-switch events, and original screenshots. Until then, performance comparisons with NordVPN, Surfshark, or ExpressVPN remain unscored.
Streaming and P2P status
Proton advertises streaming and P2P on VPN Plus, but access can change by service, account, location, app, and server. QuickVPNs has no current logged streaming matrix or P2P transfer run for this update. We therefore removed the old Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, buffer-free, and measured torrent claims. Check the third-party service’s terms and local law before use.
Proton VPN pricing checked August 30, 2026
The public plan comparison (protonvpn.com/pricing) showed Proton Free, VPN Plus, and Proton Unlimited. Proton Free is the no-cost option. The paid page uses dynamic offer and checkout values, so this review does not freeze a promotional monthly equivalent that may be wrong for a different country, currency, campaign, tax status, or billing term.

Customer support evidence
Proton’s support documentation (protonvpn.com/support/live-chat-support) says paid VPN users receive 24/7 live chat staffed by its in-house team, with Zendesk used to manage chats. The help centre is extensive, but QuickVPNs has not completed a current ticket-response or resolution-quality test. We score the documented support access separately from unverified service quality.
