Editorial status: source review completed August 30, 2026. We verified the current US plan page, privacy policy, audit index, Lightway documentation, and published third-party security reports. A fresh hands-on app, speed, leak, kill-switch, and streaming retest is still pending, so this page does not publish measured performance or unblocking claims.

This distinction matters. An audit can support a narrowly defined security or privacy claim; it cannot prove current speed, streaming access, app behaviour, or every production server. Provider documentation can establish what a feature is designed to do; it is not a substitute for our own measurement.

ExpressVPN quick verdict

ExpressVPN presents a strong documented privacy case: its policy excludes browsing activity, traffic destinations, DNS queries, and user IP addresses from its VPN usage statistics, while its audit history covers the privacy commitments, server technology, apps, browser extension, routers, and Lightway at different points in time. Its current three-tier pricing is easier to compare than the old single-plan offer, but renewal cost remains a serious part of the decision.

Best fit: a buyer who values a broad audit trail, multi-platform support, and a clearly documented proprietary protocol. Main reason to pause: the longer plans renew at materially higher annual totals, and QuickVPNs has not yet completed the current hands-on performance retest needed to recommend it for speed or streaming.

Privacy policy: what ExpressVPN says it collects

The current privacy policy says ExpressVPN does not collect the content or destination of VPN traffic, DNS queries, or user IP addresses. It does collect account data needed to provide the service and minimal aggregate app and connection summary statistics. Optional anonymous app diagnostics require opt-in, according to the policy.

That is more precise than saying “no logs” without qualification. Account, payment, app-version, and aggregate operational data are different from browsing history, but they still deserve disclosure. Readers should check the live policy when buying because data practices and optional product features can change.

What the audits do—and do not—prove

ExpressVPN maintains an unusually long public audit index. The latest VPN-privacy entry visible during this review was the third KPMG assessment of its privacy commitments, published in June 2025. The list also includes a 2022 Cure53 assessment of TrustedServer, platform-app audits, and multiple Lightway reviews.

For Lightway specifically, Cure53 and Praetorian published assessments following the protocol’s Rust reimplementation in 2024. We link the Cure53 report and the Praetorian report directly so readers can inspect scope, findings, and remediation rather than relying on a marketing summary.

An audit is a dated examination of a stated scope. It does not guarantee that every future release, server, or operational decision is flawless. Our score therefore rewards the breadth and repeatability of the published evidence without treating any report as permanent proof.

Lightway: verified design facts, not a speed result

ExpressVPN’s Lightway documentation states that the protocol is implemented in Rust, uses wolfSSL, has an open-source core, and includes post-quantum protection. It is available in ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and routers. Lightway Turbo is currently described as a Windows feature, with other platforms still to follow.

Those are product and architecture facts. They do not justify the unsupported legacy speed, latency, and competitor-comparison figures previously shown on this page. New figures will be added only with the baseline, location, protocol, app version, raw runs, medians, and screenshots defined in our VPN testing method.

TrustedServer and server-side evidence

TrustedServer is ExpressVPN’s name for its RAM-based server design and controlled software deployment process. The useful security idea is to reduce reliance on persistent local storage and make server software more consistent. The audit history includes a 2022 Cure53 assessment of TrustedServer and earlier PwC work covering privacy-policy compliance and the technology.

We describe this as a risk-reduction control, not as proof that retaining data is “physically impossible.” Infrastructure design, configuration, staff access, and surrounding systems all matter; absolute language would overstate what a RAM-only architecture or audit can establish.

Apps, platforms, and simultaneous connections

The official product pages list apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and iPad, Android, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, browsers, and routers. Device limits now depend on plan: Basic lists 10 simultaneous connections, Advanced 12, and Pro 14. The earlier eight-device statement on this review is obsolete.

We have not yet verified the current app interface, installation flow, sleep/wake reconnect, network switching, or router setup firsthand. Ease-of-use claims remain withheld until the next test session supplies an app version and original screenshots.

Streaming, gaming, and torrenting status

The previous review claimed access to more than 15 Netflix libraries, near-universal streaming support, lag-free gaming, and tested torrent performance. No reproducible evidence pack supported those statements, so they have been removed.

Streaming access changes by service, account, server, region, and date. Gaming quality depends on route and baseline latency. Torrent privacy requires a real kill-switch and leak test. QuickVPNs will publish only what worked in a named test session, with failures and limitations included; we will not turn a one-day result into a permanent guarantee.

ExpressVPN pricing and renewal terms

The US pricing page displayed the following two-year offers when checked on August 30, 2026. All amounts were shown in USD before applicable tax. These are a dated capture, not a promise: check the live ExpressVPN plan page before paying.

TierInitial service term shownInitial total shownRenewal shownConnections
Basic28 months$97.72$99.95 annually10
Advanced28 months$125.72$119.95 annually12
Pro28 months$209.72$199.95 annually14

The page described each offer as two years plus four additional months and displayed equivalent introductory monthly figures of $3.49, $4.49, and $7.49. The total charged and the renewal amount matter more than the promotional monthly equivalent. New users were shown a 30-day money-back guarantee. Feature availability also varies: the plan page says Identity Defender is for US-based customers and dedicated IP is not currently supported on macOS.

Why the editorial score is 8.0/10

Scoring areaScoreEvidence and limitation
Platform security9/10Broad dated audit trail, published Lightway assessments, open-source core, and documented server controls
Risk-free and refund terms8/1030-day guarantee shown for new users; renewal totals require attention
Services and features8/10Broad platform list and 10–14 connections, but features differ by tier and platform
Customer support7/10Support channels are documented, but QuickVPNs has not completed a current response-quality test

The simple average is 8.0/10. This is an evidence score, not a current speed score. We will recompute it after the hands-on test rather than preserving the old 8.5 rating by default.

ExpressVPN review FAQ

Did QuickVPNs test ExpressVPN in August 2026?

We completed the source, pricing, privacy-policy, and audit review. We have not completed the current hands-on app, speed, leak, kill-switch, reconnect, or streaming test, so no measured claims or original app screenshots are published yet.

How many devices can use ExpressVPN at once?

The US plan page listed 10 simultaneous connections on Basic, 12 on Advanced, and 14 on Pro when checked on August 30, 2026. Check your chosen plan because the limit is no longer one number for every subscription.

Does an ExpressVPN audit prove the service keeps no logs?

No audit proves every future condition. The published assessments provide useful evidence about the policy, technology, or app version within a defined scope and date. We read them as bounded independent evidence, not a permanent guarantee.

Update log

  • August 30, 2026: removed unsupported speed, latency, streaming, gaming, and torrenting claims; checked official pricing, renewals, device limits, privacy policy, audit index, and Lightway reports; disclosed the missing hands-on retest; removed the inactive commercial CTA; recomputed the visible evidence score.
